Panelist: Norma Garza - Mgr. Finance & Administration, Vascular Surgery- UTHEALTH San Antonio

Ms. Norma L. Garza, is Manager of Finance and Administration for the vascular surgery division in the Department of Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. She accomplished her undergraduate degree with honors from Baptist University. She completed a Master’s Degree in Business. She also earned a Radiology degree, was the first CT Technologist in San Antonio, Texas as well as a being Registered as a Diagnostic Ultrasound Sonographer in OB-Gyn, Abdominal and is a Registered Vascular Specialist. Norma also attended Oblate School of Theology, earned a degree in Lay ministry and Spiritual direction.

Panelist: Jana Kuykendoll - CEO, PAM Specialty Hospital of Luling

I have 22 years of experience in the healthcare industry. I am a Bachelors prepared Registered Nurse by background. I was the Chief Nursing Officer of PAM Specialty of Luling from 2001 until 2014. At that time I transitioned from Director of Operations to Chief Executive Officer. Addiitonally I have a Market CEO role over two other PAM Long Term Acute Care Hospitals.

Panelist: Kristen Lowe - CEO, Kindred Hospital San Antonio

Kristen Lowe, RN, is the CEO/COO of Kindred Hospital San Antonio Medical Center. With more than 20 years of healthcare experience as an ICU RN and hospital operations, Mrs. Lowe demonstrates expertise in process improvement, strategic planning, clinical integration and physician integration and engagement. She applies a comprehensive patient–accountable culture that aligns her hospital team and physicians to provide an exceptional patient experience around what matters most to them. She understands organizations, strategy, risk management and ways to drive change and growth. Mrs. Lowe proudly served on Active Duty in the US Army Nurse Corps from 2001-2015. She is a graduate of the US Army Command & General Staff College with honors in Joint Planning, Strategic Planning and she holds a master’s degree in Administration & Leadership from Central Michigan University. Mrs. Lowe deployed twice to Iraq as an ICU/Trauma Flight Nurse and earned numerous awards and decorations before her honorable discharge.

Lisa Burkhardt-Worley - Founder, Pearls of Promise Ministries

Lisa Burkhardt-Worley is an award-winning author and speaker, and is the founder of Pearls of Promise Ministries. Lisa spent 19 years as a national and local sportscaster, working as a correspondent for HBO Sports on the program, Inside the NFL and as a freelance reporter for ESPN.  She was also an anchor and reporter for the Madison Square Garden Network in New York City. She spent 15 years as an anchor in local markets, including Chattanooga, Tennessee and 12 years at KENS-TV, the CBS affiliate in San Antonio, Texas. Burkhardt-Worley has since authored or co-authored five books, the Pearls of Promise devotional, If I Only Had…Wrapping Yourself in God’s Truth During Storms of Insecurity, a four-time writing award winner, The Most Powerful P: A Child’s Introduction to the Power of Prayer, The Most Powerful P Activity Book, winner of a 2015 Christian Literary Award, and Prayer Journal. She also recently co-edited, compiled and was a contributor for the book, Stories of Roaring Faith, a nominee for a 2017 Christian Literary Award, to be announced in December. She is working on her sixth book, The Un-Crowd, expected to be completed by the end of December, 2017. She is a sought-after speaker has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows. Lisa also co-hosts an international weekly radio show with Donna Skell called A Time to Dream on the WRNO-Worldwide Radio Network. She also serves on the Christian Women in Media Association Advisory Board, was the Director of the 2017 Global Media Summit held  and is the Director of Special Projects for Roaring Lambs Ministries.

Dr. Shirley Davis - President, SDS Global Enterprises

Dr. Davis, President of SDS Global Enterprises, is an accomplished corporate executive, Global Workforce Management expert, a certified international speaker, and a master of reinvention. She has over 20 years of business experience and has worked at five Fortune 50 and 100 companies in various senior and executive leadership roles as well as in more than 20 countries. Most recently from 2006-2014, she was the Global head of Diversity & Inclusion and Workplace Strategies for the Society for Human Resource Management. She has been featured and quoted on NBC’s The Today Show, USA Today, NPR, in the Wall Street Journal, Essence Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine, The Washington Post, to name a few. Dr. Brian Schroeder - CMC, Chief Medical Officer / CCH, VP Medical Affairs, Covenant Health

Brian D. Schroeder, MD, MBA, FAAPL, FACP, SFHM, CPE, has been in a variety of healthcare settings throughout his professional career: riding the streets as an Emergency Medical Technician; working as a critical care nurse in a large university medical center; and leading a community hospital as a nurse administrator, before pursuing his career in medicine. A practicing Internal Medicine Hospitalist & Palliative Care physician since 1999, he is currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Covenant Medical Center and the Vice President for Medical Affairs of the Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, TX; previously, Dr. Schroeder served as the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer for the Sparrow Health System in Lansing, MI. Dr. Schroeder is a Fellow of the American Association for Physician Leadership, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Senior Fellow of Hospital Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Certified Physician Executive. He holds the faculty appointments of Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Lansing, MI and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Central Michigan University College of Medicine in Mount Pleasant, MI. Dr. Schroeder earned his Associate of Arts in Nursing at the University of South Dakota and later earned both his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and his Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, TX. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Michigan State University-Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies and earned his Masters of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He is a three-time recipient of resident teaching awards and was given the Excellence in Teaching award by the 2002 graduating class of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Schroeder is also a Flight Surgeon and Internist with the Air National Guard and holds the rank of Lt. Colonel. He and his wife Nancy have four children, two horses, three dogs and a flock of sheep. In his off time, Dr. Schroeder is working towards his private pilot certificate and likes to sing and play guitar.

George Brown - Director, Clinic Operations, Baylor Scott & White Health - Austin/Round Rock Region

A native of Abilene, Texas, George Brown received a Master’s in Public Administration with a Healthcare Policy and Administration concentration from Texas Tech University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/Public Policy from McMurry University. George is Director of Clinic Operations for the Austin/Round Rock Region and has been with Baylor Scott & White Health since 2011. He has over 10 years of diverse leadership experience in healthcare, with expertise in clinical practice management, group practice formation, and physician integration and alignment. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is pursuing doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership. In his spare time, George enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and trail running. He is married and can often be found participating in tea parties with his 4 young daughters (ages 8, 7, 3, and 1).

Stephen Werling - President, Werling Associates, Inc.

Stephen E. Werling, DBA, SPHR Dr. Stephen Werling is a consultant and educator with over 30 years of consulting experience and 40 years academic experience. Dr. Werling received his Doctorate of Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resource Management from the University of Kentucky. He is the President of Werling Associates, Inc. a San Antonio, TX based Human Resource Management consulting firm established in 1993 that specializes in the design of compensation and incentive plans and selection systems. Dr. Werling is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Abstract

The presentation will review the results of the 2017 TSHHRAE Wage and Benefit Survey and current issues in compensation including projected FLSA changes and annual increases. The presentation will also review current pay practices in relationship to the tightening labor market.

He then got his first law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He practiced law for a couple of years in South Africa and was admitted to practice there. Then he came to Dallas and started over again.
